There’s nothing quite like the comfort of a hot shower, so it can be a real pain when you’re stuck waiting and waiting for the water to heat up. You might turn the knob all the way to hot, and still have to wait several minutes to get a change in temp. Or worse, it might not change at all! What exactly is going on?
Common Reasons for Cold Shower Water
Getting stuck with cold shower water doesn’t exactly have anything to do with the weather outside. (Though it would certainly be nice to have a hot shower during the colder months!) What’s actually happening could be a number of different things.
-
The distance of your plumbing layout
Some homes simply don’t have the right systems in place. You might be struggling with your hot water because your fixtures are just too far away from your hot water heater. The farther away your shower is, the longer it takes for the hot water to travel where you are. It can be annoying, but on the bright side, you probably won’t need to make a call for water heater repair. You’ll just have to practice patience.
-
Delayed water delivery from a restrictor
Your plumbing setup might have a low volume restrictor. People install these on showers or faucets to limit the flow of water. This is helpful if you want to conserve water in your home, but it can also make it take longer for your shower water to heat. That’s because all of the cold water has to run through your pipes and shower before the hot water shows up. Again, you can just play the waiting game, or you can choose to remove the restrictor.
-
Too much sediment in your water heater
Unfortunately, Indiana is well known for having hard water. This means that hard water minerals can settle on the bottom of your water heater tank over time. The sediment buildup can dramatically lower the efficiency of your unit. If this is the problem, flushing your system might help. This can make a big difference. Plus, it’s not as involved as a total water heater repair.

Other water heater repair problems
When you’ve explored all of the other options for why your water is cold, it’s time to take a closer look at your water heater. These units are only supposed to last around 10 years or so. If you have an older model, it might be time to get an upgrade. Otherwise, you might just need to get it tuned up. Scheduling your water heater repair can help make sure you don’t invest in an all-new system too soon. You might only need a part replaced, and that can be done pretty quickly. You just have to know who to call!
